All entries must register through the Council web site. No registrations will be taken at the door. All Scouts must be in their class A-uniform shirt to race. 1) Car Dimensions: a) Width: 2-3/4" maximum b) Length: 7" maximum c) Weight: 5 ounces (+.04) measured on a 1/10th digital scale d) Width between wheels: 1-3/4" minimum e) Ground clearance: 3/8" minimum f) Wheelbase: Any wheel base as long as wheels do not exceed the 7” inch total length requirement. Axle slots not required. g) Height: Limited only by track dimensions/restrictions (typically 4" maximum) 2) Car Construction: a) Wheel/axle bearings, bushings, inserts, and washers are prohibited. b) The car shall not ride on springs or flexible suspensions. c) Only official BSA Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby wheels are permitted. We encourage the use of the BSA Block of wood and ask if at all possible, try not to buy a Pre Cut Car. Ask for help in your pack so your son can make a special one-of-a-kind car. Building the body is one of the most educational things about this exercise. The main body structure must be made of wood. The car design may be enhanced by the addition of other stable materials such as plastic or metal. d) LUBRICATION: Over application of lubricant, which results in excessive shedding onto the track is not allowed. Lubricants you may use include but are not limited to: Graphite and Krytox. We encourage you to use VERY SMALL AMOUNTS of Krytox 100 over graphite because it does not damage the car’s paint and generally promotes a cleaner and safer work and race area. You can find information regarding the most effective use of Krytox 100 online and through workshop participation. e) Cars may only be lubricated prior to inspection. Once a car has passed inspection, lubricating or re-applying lubrication is prohibited. f) AXLES: Any metal Axles with a nail head and an overall diameter of no less than .084 inches are allowed. One-piece axles that extend through the width of the car to support both wheels are not allowed. You may also polish and groove the axle provided that the journal portion of the axle (the part the wheel rides on) is no less than .084 inches. g) Stationary details, such as steering wheel and driver, are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the specified maximum car dimensions. h) The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices. i) No loose, moving, or kinetic materials of any kind are allowed in or on the car. j) WHEELS: BSA wheels only. Tread surface maybe trued. The inner and outer wheel hubs can be coned and or polished. ***** No Plastic May Be Removed From Inside the Wheel ! Wheel Specs: 1. Tread surface width must be no less than 8.0 mm 2. The tread surface must be flat and parallel to the wheel bore. 3. All lettering and numbering must remain visible on both sides of the wheel including the tread bumps on the outside of wheels 4. If wheel well weights prevent the viewing of the lettering of the wheel, the inspector may ask that the wheel be removed for inspection. k) The following wheel modifications are prohibited: 1. Removing material from the Inside Tread surface or the Inside sidewall surface 2. Drilling holes in the sidewalls or tread area 3. Filling wheel surface with any type of material 4. Filling the wheel bores and re-drilling the bore 5. Rounding of the tread surface 6. Grooving, H cutting, or V cutting the tread surface l) At least 4 wheels must be attached to the sides of the car body directly across from each other. Each wheel must be attached to the car with a legal axle. Although 4 wheels are required, it is not required that all 4 wheels touch the track surface. It can actually be difficult to get all 4 of the wheels to touch. Most of the fastest cars have one front wheel raised slightly and not touching. m) When placed on the starting block, no part of the car may extend beyond the face of the starting pin. n) The car must have been made during the current Cub Scout year (made after the prior year's District derby). We encourage families to build Pinewood Derby cars & believe practice makes perfect ! 3) Registration: a) A contestant may enter only one (1) car to compete. b) Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it may compete. The committee shall designate one (1) scale and dimension template as official and official measurements are final. All other scales and templates are unofficial, and are not guaranteed to match official scales/templates. c) If a car does not pass inspection, the owner will be informed of the reason for failure, and may make adjustments within the official weigh-in period. d) Contestants are encouraged to register promptly and allow ample time for registration and adjustments. Late arrivals or adjustments are not grounds for postponing races. e) The Cub Scout must enter his own car. The Cub Scout must be present at inspection and registration to enter a car. Once properly registered, the car may compete regardless of the subsequent presence/absence of the Cub Scout. 4) Racing: a) The derby consists of a number of heats, rounds, and races, as determined in advance by race officials (each car will race the same number or times in each lane). b) If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes with another car, or loses an axle or other part, it may run in the next heat if it can be repaired quickly before the car's next heat begins. Race officials shall inspect damages and determine what repairs, if any, are allowed. At the discretion of race officials, repaired cars may be subject to official re-inspection. c) The decision to re-run a race is at the sole discretion of the race officials. In general, races will only re-run where one car interferes with another or where a winner cannot be determined. The race officials' judgment on whether or not a race is valid is final. d) Failing to cross the finish line or finishing in another lane (or cars not repaired in time to participate in a race) will be assessed the maximum heat time (for electronic/ computerized tracks) or last place in the heat (for manual tracks). Failing to finish or finishing in another lane are not grounds to re-run a race. e) Cars which repeatedly interfere with other cars may, at the sole discretion of race officials, be run backwards or be removed from the heat and assessed the maximum heat time or last place for the heat. The car may be repaired and participate in subsequent heats. f) For electronic/computerized tracks the maximum heat time shall be determined by race officials (5 seconds is recommended) 5) Appeals: a) The Cub Scout must take all questions of rules interpretation and procedures to race officials promptly. Appeals by parents, spectators, and other non-scouts will not be heard (although parents may counsel Scouts in making an appeal). b) Appeals related to a race must be addressed immediately to race officials. Once officials have accepted electronic/computerized race results as "final", no appeals can be granted (please note that this is a function of track controls). For non-electronic tracks, no appeals will be granted after the start of the next race. c) Race officials have the authority to rule on any situation not covered in these rules, d) Unsportsmanlike conduct by any participant or spectator is grounds for removal from the competition area (a participant's car may remain in the race and run unattended). 6) Disqualification: a) These Pinewood Derby Rules apply to the District derby only. The rules may also be used for pack derbies. For pack derbies, the pack derby committee may modify rules. b) District Derby: For the Bucks County Council, BSA, Tohickon District derby only, cars which fail to meet registration requirements or which are otherwise disqualified by the inspection committee or derby officials will not be allowed to compete. If disqualified after the start of racing, the car will be removed from competition. When determining eligibility of pack derby winners for moving up to the District derby, please keep these rules in mind ("alternates" to the District derby are not authorized). Ineligible cars ascending to the District derby will not be allowed to compete. Sending an ineligible car to the District derby "cheats" a deserving Scout with an eligible car out of the opportunity to compete in the District derby. c) Pack Races: All final decisions related to enforcement of derby rules are at the discretion of the Pack derby committee. This includes special considerations and decisions on eligibility. It is strongly recommended that the maximum penalty should never exceed declaring a car ineligible in the final standings for derby prizes/awards or for ascending to the District derby. Disqualification or removal of a car from racing should be avoided at all costs. Every Scout should be given every opportunity to run his car. Need Helpful info ?
