Hello Pack 52- I hope you’ve been keeping warm and staying well! A very snowy February didn’t stop our Dens from keeping busy and making progress on their Adventures this past month. In this month’s Pack 52 newsletter, we’re featuring an update from our Arrow of Light Den by AOL Den Leader, Mr. Steve Lieberman. Check out Steve’s blog post below and on our Pack 52 website, Doylestown Cub Scout Pack 52 - Home (weebly.com) (under the Announcements tab). We’re planning a lot of activities for Pack 52 this coming Spring. Please mark your calendars for the following events: Pinewood Derby
Service Projects We’re evaluating a few options for Service Projects this Spring. Tentatively, please save the date for the Fonthill Woodlands Clean-up on Saturday, March 27th, at 8:50 am to noon. Event confirmation and details will be provided in early March. Spring Family Camping We will have two separate Spring Family Camping trips organized at the den-level in order to have smaller groups.
Blue & Gold Banquet / AOL Crossing-Over Ceremony Tentatively, please save the date for our Annual Pack 52 Blue & Gold Banquet on Sunday, June 6th, at 4:00 pm, at Peace Valley Park. The banquet will be held outdoors at one of the park pavilions to allow social distancing and fresh air. Event confirmation and details will be provided in the coming weeks. Please contact me if you have any questions or need support, at [email protected]. Thank you. Dave Cunning Cubmaster Pack 52 Steve writes… The Arrow of Light den has been meeting outdoors the entire year and we have not let Mother Nature slow us down. All required adventures and electives have been completed. We are waiting to hold our moving up ceremony so the Cub Scouts can join a Troop! We started the scouting year working on the Building A Better World adventure. The Cub Scouts learned a great deal about the history of the United States, their rights and duties as a citizen, as well taking responsibility for planning and leading the den in an activity. The highlight of this adventure was undoubtedly when Doylestown’s own Mayor Ron Strouse joined us for a den meeting in which he explained a tremendous amount about what is involved in being the mayor of the borough. Mayor Strouse was so incredibly generous with his time answering all the questions the Cub Scouts and their parents asked of him! We introduced the Duty to God In Action adventure shortly after the start of the scouting year to allow the Cub Scouts sufficient time to complete that independent activity at their leisure. From the conversations we had afterwards it was apparent they all embrace performing a duty to God in their own individual ways each and every day. Before Daylight Saving Time ended and took away some of our daylight, we began the Outdoor Adventure required adventure. The Cub Scouts had a great time explaining the actions they should take should they encounter extreme weather events during a hike or camping trip. We concluded this experience with practicing tying a bowline and learning when it should be used and why. Scouting Adventure was next up for the Cub Scouts as they began the preparation for joining a troop. We will be joining in on several of the local troops’ meetings so the Cub Scouts can make an informed decision about which troop they wish to join as they continue on with their scouting experience. With some of the parents’ assistance, we set up four stations for the scout to move between to learn how to tie a square knot, two half hitches, and a taut-line hitch. They also learned about how to whip and fuse the ends of different kinds of rope, natural and synthetic fibers. Finally, the Cub Scouts completed not just one but two electives, Game Design and, Looking Back, Looking Forward. The games the scouts developed will surely find their way on the store shelves soon! Once the ground thaws we will be filling and burying a time capsule to be dug up in the not-too-distant future, which will surely be a memorable event for us all. Hello Pack 52-
Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed the holidays. As we start the new year, I want to take a moment to highlight some activities for the coming months. Notably, we've started planning for our Annual Pack 52 Pinewood Derby which will be held in the late-April / May timeframe this year. We're working to finalize the date, location, and format (to comply with social distancing requirements, etc.) in the coming weeks, and we will distribute Pinewood Derby car kits during den meetings in early February. More information will be provided next month. We will also have Spring family camping, hiking, service projects, and the annual Blue & Gold / Arrow of Lights Crossing-Over Ceremony. Many of these activities will be organized at the den-level in order to have smaller groups and be outdoors. Since we aren't having monthly Pack meetings this year, each Den will periodically share a blog post about their recent adventures and accomplishments to help stay connected with the rest of the Pack. This month, we're featuring an update from Jai Sachdev about our Webelos Den. Check out Jai's blog post, below. Please contact me if you have any questions or need support, at [email protected]. Thank you. Dave Cunning Cubmaster Pack 52 Jai writes... The pandemic has not slowed this Webelos Den down one bit. All of our meetings have been outdoors and we are thankful for that! So far we have completed four required adventures and started on an elective. Details on what we have been up to are below. Many more great adventures are planned for the Webelos Den in the New Year! We started the year working on the First Responder Adventure in which we learned about basic first aid. Fortunately we did not have to apply our first aid skills when we reviewed BSA pocketknife safety! To prepare for our fall camp and for the Cast Iron Chef Adventure, we learned about cooking and cleaning while camping. The boys practiced this at our den meeting and then prepared a wonderful meal at our camp in early November at Tohickon. The parents were not only impressed with the spread but also with the enthusiasm shown when cleaning up afterwards. Everything for the dinner was cooked and cleaned by the boys. We had incredible weather for the camp and we were thrilled to be joined by our rowdy Lion Den. At the camp the boys got to learn about trees and tree identification for the Into the Woods Adventure. We launched rockets, had a great campfire with plenty of songs and jokes, and released Chinese lanterns. The next adventure we tackled was Webelos Walkabout. To practice for the big 3 mile hike required for this adventure we had a 1 mile historic hike in Doylestown in which we walked to and learned a bit about the history of OLMC, the Michener Museum, Washington Crossing Council, and the Mercer Museum. We then had our 3 mile hike on the muddy backtrails of Lake Galena on another beautiful day. Great weather meant the park was busy but the boys adhered to our COVID rules and kept their masks on the entire time. We saw the Pooh Tree, at least six deer, and a heron. We had a little bit of an adventure when we found the trail had been washed out at one point but using our Scout skills we were able to find a safe place to cross a stream and find the trail again! Finally we ended the calendar year working on the Duty to God and You Adventure. We discussed what it means to be reverent and how we can also be reverent towards our great country and particularly towards those that have made the ultimate sacrifice in service towards it. We went for a short walk to visit and learn about several memorials at the old and new Courthouses in Doylestown. These included the Korean War Memorial, the Gulf War Memorial, the World War II Memorial, the First Responders Memorial, the Global War on Terrorism Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, the Civil War Memorial, the 9/11 Memorial, and the World War I Memorial. Dear Pack 52 Families!
I hope you and your loved ones are well. Pack 52 will restart Cub Scout activities in September. As with so many other things, our approach will be different this year. Notably, we will not hold large group / indoor meetings and we will not use indoor classrooms for weekly Den meetings for the foreseeable future. Instead, we will have a mix of small group / outdoor and virtual-video Den meetings, and other outdoor activities using standard social distancing, mask-wearing, hand-washing, etc. Some outdoor activities we’re looking forward to include Den-based Adventure skills building (e.g., knot-tying, campfire-building), small group hikes, service projects (like park clean-ups), model rocket-launches, and possibly family camping. We also intend to host our Annual Pack 52 Pinewood Derby in March, but using a different format to ensure safety. Den meetings will begin on September 22nd, and Den-specific information will be communicated soon. Everyone’s safety and health will be our top priority in all of our activities. Parent / adult involvement will be more important than ever to ensure our Cub Scouts can participate safely in any outdoor activity and successfully in virtual-video meetings. We also understand that each family has its own view on the right level of participation in any in-person activities, and we will attempt to be as flexible as possible in supporting completion of Cub Scout Adventure requirements. Per BSA guidelines, anyone who is sick or in a higher-risk health category should not attend in-person activities. We will revise our approach to meetings and activities throughout the year as conditions change. We will have a Cub Scout Pack 52 “Drive-Thru” Recruiting & Sign-Up Event on Friday, September 18th, at 6:00-7:00 pm, at the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School parking lot. Please tell a friend! We are requesting adult volunteers to be Den Leaders / Assistant Den Leaders for our Lion (Kindergarten), Wolf (2nd grade), and Bear (3rd grade) Dens. Please consider volunteering! We’re fortunate to have a lot of experienced leaders in our Pack who can help you be successful. Our annual dues for the 2020-2021 season will be $150 per Cub Scout (plus a one-time $25 Joining Fee if new to BSA). BSA national and Washington Crossing Council have increased their fees significantly. As a result, Pack 52’s $150 dues cover the mandatory BSA National registration fee ($66) & the Washington Crossing Council local council service fee ($60), plus Boys Life magazine ($12) and a nominal amount for local Pack 52 expenses, like belt-loops ($12). We have kept the local Pack 52 portion of the dues low this year to help offset the BSA / WCC increases – we’re able to do this because of last year’s strong fundraising, combined with reduced large group events. For your awareness, many neighboring Cub Scout Packs have increased their dues to $200 or more. We want Cub Scouts to be accessible to everyone and financial assistance is available for those who need it. Payment of dues will be by check only, made out to “OLMC Pack 52”. Please mail your check to me or stop by our “Drive-Thru” Sign-up Event to drop off your check on September 18th. All Cub Scouts who pay their dues by October 1st will receive a free model rocket kit. Please email me or drive by our “Drive-Thru” Recruiting & Sign-Up Event to confirm your intention to participate in our Cub Scout Pack 52 in the 2020-2021 season, and let me know if you plan to attend in-person activities or virtual only. If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, please feel free to contact me ([email protected]) or Kat Broadhead ([email protected]). Thank you. Dave Cunning Cubmaster Pack 52 Dear Parents,

Hello Pack 52! Welcome to the 2019-2020 program year for Pack 52! We have a lot of fun and exciting activities planned for this year! NEW CUBMASTER MESSAGE from DAVE CUNNING I wanted to take a few minutes to introduce myself as the new Cubmaster for Pack 52. But first I want to thank Jim Kimmel, our previous Cubmaster, for his years of service leading and helping to build Pack 52 into the strong organization that we have today. I volunteered to be cubmaster because Scouting has been a very important part of my life. From becoming an Eagle Scout, to volunteering at BSA summer camps, I have enjoyed all of the experiences scouting has to offer. We have been a part of Pack 52 for two years and my son, Jimmy, is now a Bear scout. I have been impressed with Pack 52 and I’m committed to provide a positive Scouting experience for the entire Pack 52 family. Our parent volunteers and Leaders are the foundation of a successful Cub Scout program. Without all of you, we couldn’t provide the opportunities for learning, friendship and fun that we do, so THANK YOU! As a new leader, I ask for your support and encourage your input and feedback on the program throughout the year. Please reach out to me at [email protected] with your ideas and suggestions. See below for some important information to get us started for the Fall! RECRUITING OPEN HOUSE : SCOUT ME IN!

The fundraisers help us to keep our annual dues low from year to year. Our Popcorn “Kernel” (aka sales coordinator) is Jayme Foster. Sales run Sep – Oct and we will be selling popcorn door-to-door, through online sales, and at “show and sell” events at locations in Doylestown. More details to follow in the coming weeks so, keep your “ears” open (“corny” pun intended). YEARLY DUES & UNIFORMS Annual dues remain the same as last year, $125 per scout.
